Severe storms, rain threaten the Prairies, tornado risk over northwestern Ont.

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watches and rainfall warnings

Heavy rain, damaging winds and hail possible

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of southern and central Saskatchewan, and parts of southeastern Alberta. The agency says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may produce large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain.

Rainfall warnings are also in effect for much of southern Saskatchewan, with Environment Canada saying some areas could see up to 50 millimetres of rain by Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, a tornado watch is in effect for parts of northwestern Ontario, including the Dryden and Kenora areas. Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of tornadoes.

The agency is urging people to be prepared for severe weather and to take cover if they see a tornado warning.

Here are some tips to stay safe during a thunderstorm:

  • Go to a safe place indoors, such as a basement or storm cellar.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.
  • Unplug electrical appliances.
  • Avoid using the telephone.
  • If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle.

  • Go to a basement or storm cellar.
  • If there is no basement or storm cellar, go to the lowest level of your home and find a room without windows.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.
  • Cover yourself with a blanket or pillow.
  • If you are outside, lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.
